    Art-Ur Innovative inebriation ( Photos )

(An interview by the museum’s curator, Michel Dircken, with the photographer Art-Ur .)

Michel Dircken: Hallo Artur. ‘Art-Ur. Ivresses inédites’ translates roughly as ‘innovative inebriation’: do you get drunk to take your pictures?

Artur: By no means. At least not with alcohol or substances. I’ve had my fix in my earlier days. What intoxicates to delirium when I take a photo is the beauty of the ephemeral, such as a forbidden thought, and the opportunity to shoot it as such for posterity.

MD: How do you define beauty?

A: Beauty, in my view is not only a lot of mega pixels or molecules arranged in accordance with the prevailing fashion trends. Spiritual beauty lies in the acceptance of the ephemeral.

MD: You are German. Why are you exhibiting at the Fantasy Art Museum in Saint Gilles?

A: A little warm-up before the MoMA in New York, or the Grand Palais in Paris… Who knows? Well, to tell you the truth, it’s especially because I find your museum awfully nice; and also because I have made Brussels my home.

MD: Do you consider yourself a great photograph?

A: Well, I stand 6’2”, so I can say that I am in any event a tall photographer!

MD: Do you live from your photography?

A: No. I am fortunate not to have to depend on it for my daily bread. I have other sources of income.

MD: Do you also photograph weddings, baptisms, etc.?

A: Good Heavens, no! Believe me, after 4 divorces I’ve had my fill of weddings in this life – at least for the time being. But one thing is certain: no wedding photos for Artur!

MD: Are you a portrait photographer?

A: Yes and no. Yes, because I live alone and I need people around me. Their portraits are my way of thanking them. And no, because I cover all subjects. From stiletto heels to exotic flowers and even Borinage landscapes.

    MD: One last word?

A: I would like to thank all the people who have posed and continue to pose regularly for me. It’s thanks to them that I exist as a photographer.
